#36-Music series, continued/ Série musicale, suite
I haven’t been in touch since February: not only was I busy with my trip to the Czech Republic for my exhibition “32 Variations, a Tribute to J.S. Bach,” but I also had knee surgery, which of course slowed down my work considerably since I was confined to moving with crutches. I’m back on my feet now, so I can finally give you an update.
Je ne vous ai donné aucune nouvelle depuis février: non seulement j’ai été prise par mon voyage en Tchéquie pour mon exposition “Hommage à JS Bach”, mais j’ai été opérée d’un genou, ce qui a bien sûr largement ralenti mon travail puisque j’ai été immobilisée. Je refais surface et peux donc vous donner quelques nouvelles.
In March, I began quilting my new series, “Music Gallery.” Unlike the Bach series, whose 32 pieces had a similar structure since they represented variations on the same work, each piece in my “Music Gallery” has a different structure. In fact, the musical works I chose to interpret span several centuries and therefore have very different styles. So I have to find a suitable quilting pattern for each piece. Below are a few examples. On the left is the top (the sewn-only version); on the right is the quilted and finished version.
En mars, j’ai commencé à quilter ma nouvelle série “Galerie musicale”. Au contraire de la série Bach, dont les 32 tableaux avaient une structure voisine puisqu’ils représentaient des variations d’une même œuvre, chaque tableau de ma “Galerie musicale” a une structure différente. En effet, les œuvres que j’ai choisi d’interpréter s’étalent sur plusieurs siècles et ont donc des styles très différents. Il me faut donc trouver pour chaque tableau un quilting adapté. En voici quelques exemples. A gauche la version seulement cousue, à droite, la version matelassée (quiltée) et terminée.

The exhibition in Brno, Czech Republic, at the end of April was well worth it: a beautiful venue and an engaged audience. I gave two short talks each day to explain the process of musical interpretation and visual transformation. The quilted jacket, sewn by my friend Béatrice, attracted a lot of attention and earned me many comments and compliments.
L’exposition à Brno en Tchéquie fin avril en valait la peine: un très bel endroit, un public intéressé. J’ai donné deux mini conférences chaque jour pour expliquer le processus d’interprétation musicale et transformation visuelle. La veste quiltée, cousue par mon amie Béatrice a été très remarquée et m’a attiré de nombreux commentaires et compliments.
After returning from Brno, I created three quilts on the theme of “Habitat” for the European Patchwork Meeting competition in Alsace this September. It’s a very competitive international contest and my chances of being selected for the final exhibit are slim, but as the saying goes: “Nothing ventured, nothing gained.”
Then I got back to quilting my “Music Gallery.”
Au retour de Brno, j’ai créé 3 tableaux sur le thème “Habitat” pour le concours du Carrefour européen du patchwork en Alsace en septembre. C’est un concours très couru et mes chances sont très minces d’être sélectionnée, mais comme dit le proverbe: “Qui ne tente rien n’a rien”.
Puis je me suis remise à quilter ma “Galerie musicale”.

June is set aside for family visits (my in-laws, my sister) and a three-day trip to Leipzig, Germany, for the Bach Festival. I’ve always wanted to go there at least once in my life.
So I’ll resume creating new musical paintings in July and August to wrap up my series. Have a great summer, everyone
Le mois de juin est dédié à des visites familiales (ma belle famille, ma soeur) et à un voyage de 3 jours à Leipzig en Allemagne pour le festival Bach. Je voulais y être allée, une fois dans ma vie.
Je reprendrai donc la création de nouveaux tableaux musicaux en juillet et août pour clore ma série. Bon été à toutes
