My series “32 textile paintings in homage to JS Bach” returned home today, sent back by the International Quilt Museum in Nebraska, where it had been on display since early September. It will stay here for a short while before heading off to the quilt festival in the Czech Republic at the end of April.
Ma série “32 tableaux textiles en hommage à JS Bach” est revenue aujourd’hui à la maison, renvoyée par le musée international du quilt dans le Nebraska où elle était exposée depuis début septembre. Elle va faire un court séjour ici avant de repartir pour le festival du quilt en Tchéquie fin avril.
I told you last fall that I had started working on a new musical series. I started with a painting inspired by Monteverdi's music, then did one for Bach, Vivaldi, Handel, Scarlatti and Mozart. I then moved on to more “modern” composers, such as Alexander Scriabin, Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy, Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass, and George Gershwin. For each one, I focused on one of their works, which I listened to over and over again until I came up with the concept of “how I could best translate this work onto fabric and in color.”
Je vous avais dit cet automne que j’avais commencé à travailler sur une nouvelle série musicale. J’ai commencé par un tableau inspiré par la musique de Monteverdi, puis j’en ai fait un pour Bach, Vivaldi, Haendel, Scarlatti et Mozart. J’ai ensuite continué avec des compositeurs plus “modernes”, par exemple Alexandre Scriabine, Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy, Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass ou George Gershwin. Pour chacun, je me suis attachée à une de leurs œuvres, que j’ai écoutée en boucle jusqu’à ce que me vienne le concept de “comment je pouvais traduire cette oeuvre au mieux sur tissu et en couleurs”
I already have 16 paintings with the tops finished, but I still need to quilt them. And then I still have a few composers waiting eagerly for me to put their music into colors. I plan to finish the series by the end of the summer.
J’ai déjà 16 tableaux dont le dessus est terminé, mais il me faut encore les quilter/matelasser. Et puis j’ai encore quelques compositeurs qui attendent de pied ferme que je mette leur musique en couleurs. Je projette de terminer la série d’ici la fin de l’été.
To take a break from my musical series, I made a map of France for a historian friend who wanted a backdrop for his TV shows. I think it turned out well—in any case, he was absolutely delighted.
Pour faire un break de ma série musicale, j’ai fait une carte de France pour un ami historien, qui voulait une toile de fond pour ses émissions télé. J’ai bien réussi me semble-t-il, en tous cas il était tout à fait ravi.

And then I just gave a lecture to an audience in Nantes on the artistic process developed during my Bach series, and I have created a patchwork-style fabric, which I used to make a jacket, with a lot of help with the sewing from one of my friends who is a skilled seamstress. I also sewed a matching bag that can hold my tablet, glasses, cell phone, keys, and wallet. I'll carry them to exhibitions and lectures.
Et puis j’ai fait une conférence devant un public nantais sur le processus artistique développé pendant ma série Bach, et j’ai créé un tissu façon patchwork, dont j’ai fait une veste, très aidée pour l’assemblage couture par une de mes amies qui est fine couturière. J’ai également cousu un sac assorti dans lequel tablette, lunettes, portable, clés et portefeuille font bon ménage. Je les porterai pour les expos ou conférences.
Happy end of winter to all. For those of you who are in Paris or can easily get there, I recommend the Gerhard Richter retrospective at the Vuitton Foundation, which closes in March. It's wonderful and well worth the trip! I came from Nantes especially to see it and I don't regret it. (My photos are not professional, but they will give you an idea.)
Bonne fin d’hiver à toutes. Pour celles qui sont à Paris ou peuvent y aller facilement, je vous conseille la rétrospective “Gerhard Richter” à la fondation Vuitton, qui fermera en mars. Une merveille qui vaut le déplacement! Je suis venue de Nantes exprès et je ne le regrette pas (mes photos ne sont pas professionnelles, mais cela vous donnera un aperçu).
