Successes and failures this month, which is good, that's life!
I finished my cathedral #7, also finished #9...made attempts for #8, but got stuck on the composition.
I had a painting refused and another accepted
And then I embarked on a good week of dyeing and printing.

J'ai terminé ma cathédrale #7, également fini la #9...fait des essais pour #8, mais j’ai coincé sur la composition.
J'ai eu un tableau refusé et un autre accepté
Et puis je me suis lancée dans une bonne semaine de teintures et impressions.
Glowing Notre Dame
Cathedral #7, 120 x 90 cm / 48” x 36”
Here is my cathedral "Glowing Notre Dame" started last month (I showed you the beginning of the work in my November post). It took me about 80 hours of work to finish it, not counting the printing and dyeing of the fabrics. It's a lot, but the result was worth it, wasn't it?

Voici ma cathédrale "Notre Dame rayonnante" commencée le mois dernier (je vous ai donné des photos du début du travail dans mon billet de novembre). Il m'aura fallu environ 80 heures de travail pour la terminer, sans compter l'impression et la teinture des tissus. C'est beaucoup, mais le résultat en valait la peine, n'est ce pas?

Cathedral #8
It remains in limbo for now. I'm trying to create it from my father's shirts (deceased 4 years ago now), which I've kept preciously. So far my attempts are not conclusive. So I'm letting my creativity simmer, I'll eventually find a way to use them.
Elle reste pour l'instant dans les limbes. Je cherche à la créer à partir des chemises de mon père (décédé il y a 4 ans maintenant), que j'ai gardées précieusement. Pour l'instant mes essais ne sont pas concluants. Je laisse donc mijoter ma créativité, je finirai bien par trouver une façon de les exploiter.

Notre Dame de l’espérance
This one is smaller, and I created it with a different technique. I took a picture of my cathedral #4 (Christmas Cathedral) and modified it using several applications on my Ipad. I sent the photo of the result to a fabric printing company, and then I used this printed fabric by cutting it and adding a background with commercial fabrics. I find the result interesting.
Celle-ci est plus petite, et je l'ai créée avec une technique différente. J'ai pris une photo de ma cathédrale #4 (Cathédrale de Noël) et je l'ai modifiée à l'aide de plusieurs applications sur mon Ipad. J'ai envoyé la photo du résultat obtenu à une entreprise d'impression sur tissu, et j'ai alors utilisé ce tissu imprimé en le recoupant et en lui ajoutant un fond avec des tissus du commerce. Je trouve le résultat intéressant.
Unexpected Attack, 34” x 46”
One refused … the other accepted
My painting "Unexpected Attack" was not selected for the "Minimalist" exhibition. It was apparently not minimalist enough for the jury, which refused it. However my "Tribute to my Grandmother" below (47” x 35”) is one of the 31 textile paintings selected for the SAQA virtual exhibition "Historical Detail" which will start next January. The fabrics and laces used come from her dowry.
We are only three European artists among the thirty international artists on the list of winners. Including my Lithuanian friend Maryte Collard, I feel in very good company :)
Mon tableau "Invasion soudaine" n'a pas été sélectionné pour l'exposition "Minimaliste". Il n'était apparemment pas assez minimaliste pour le jury, qui l'a refusé. Cependant, mon "Hommage à ma grand-mère" ( 118 x 88 cm ) ci-dessous est l'une des 31 peintures textiles sélectionnées pour l'exposition virtuelle de SAQA "Détail historique" qui débutera en janvier prochain. Les tissus et dentelles utilisées proviennent de sa dot.
Nous ne sommes que trois artistes européennes parmi les trente artistes internationales figurant sur la liste des lauréats. Dont mon amie lituanienne Maryte Collard… je me sens en très bonne compagnie :)
Dyeing and printing week
I was almost out of dark fabrics, so I had to dye, mostly blues and reds. But I also had a nagging need to work with yellows and reds (makes sense for warming up in the middle of winter, doesn't it?). So I prepared two stacks of fabrics, previously soaked in a soda crystal solution that acts as a fixative. One to dye , the other to print , with the method called "scraping". I had a blast!
Je n'avais presque plus de tissus foncés, et il me fallait donc teindre, surtout des bleus et des rouges. Mais j'avais aussi un un besoin lancinant de travailler avec des jaunes et des rouges (ça fait sens pour se réchauffer au milieu de l'hiver n'est-ce pas?). Alors j'ai préparé deux piles de tissus, préalablement passés dans une solution de cristaux de soude qui agit comme fixateur. L'une pour les teindre, l'autre pour les imprimer, avec la méthode appelée "scraping", soit "étalage de couleur". Je m'en suis donnée à coeur joie!
First step: the dyeing process
Here is the organization of my cutting table, converted for the occasion. Then the preparation of the concentrated colors, the bathing of the fabrics, the rinsing color by color, the hanging and finally the ironing and folding. All that's left to do now is to put it on the shelves...but where will I find the space?
D'abord les teintures: l'organisation de ma table de coupe, reconvertie pour l'occasion. Puis la préparation des couleurs concentrées, le bain des tissus, le rinçage couleur par couleur, l'étendage et enfin le repassage et le pliage. Il n'y a plus qu'à ranger sur les étagères...mais où donc vais-je trouver de la place?
Second step, the printing
I cover the table with an old thick cloth and a white sheet of plastic. My tools (squeegees and a roller) and the dye with thickener on the left. This gives me room to lay my fabric and print it.
Deuxième temps, l’impression
Je recouvre la table d'un vieux tissu épais puis d'un drap blanc et d'une feuille de plastic. Mes outils (raclettes et un rouleau) et la teinture additionnée d'un épaississant à gauche. Cela me laisse la place pour poser mon tissu et l'imprimer.
I “scraped” 30-40 pieces, either one square meter or one half. Here are some of the results. There is still much work to do on them before they can pretend to be textile paintings to be hung!
J'ai imprimé 30-40 pièces, d’un demi ou d’un mètre carré. Voici quelques-uns des résultats. Il y a encore beaucoup de travail à faire avant qu'ils puissent prétendre être prêts à être accrochés !
Since my studio is so small, I could barely move for fear of spilling dye, and my sewing machine sat idle, poor thing! I'll give it some more time to rest and start sewing again with the new year. I will then have to hurry to make my painting "Architecture" for our group of artists "20 Perspectives" which must be ready by the end of January.

Comme mon atelier est tout petit, je pouvais à peine bouger de peur de renverser de la teinture, et ma machine à coudre est restée en déshérence, la pauvre! Je lui laisse encore un temps de repos et recommencerai à coudre avec la nouvelle année. Il me faudra alors dare dare faire mon tableau "Architecture" pour notre groupe d'artistes "20 Perspectives" qui doit être prêt pour fin janvier.
